and Girard Ave.
Many years ago, Philadelphia had what was perhaps the
world's best city transport system, with over 2000 cars, it served
the 2 million plus residents with distinction. The cars ran frequently,
reliably, and they went virtually everywhere within the city.
My earliest recollections of life were of the cars
running past my window when I was just 6 month old. My first sentence
was "I see a trolley car, Mommy." But since uttering
that sentence, one line after another closed, until there were
only 5 lines remaining. This is the first time in my life that
one has come back."
I've dedicated my life to doing what little one person
can to bring back as much of that system as possible by showing those interested just what such a system would look like today. I do this by using other cities as examples in my videos. Those video programs have been used to influence public opinion in many places, most notably St. Louis where they were carried and shown at many public meetings. While I don't know what influence they had here, I'm most gratified to see the reversal of over 50 tragic years during which a most elegant and
efficient form of transportation was replaced by one so obviously
inferior.
